What Is Depression?

Unfortunately, many people tend to view depression as a mood, such as being happy, excited, or sad. They also think it is a mood we all have control over and can change or eliminate from our lives. However, it is far more than that. Unlike a mood that is a temporary feeling, often due to an outside catalyst or event, depression is a complicated mental health condition that genetic or biological factors, environmental factors, trauma, or psychological factors can impact.

While you are at The Forest Sober Living, you will have the time and space to work with your counselors and therapist to discover the cause of your depression and work on a solution that will allow you to live a life free of the weight and danger of depression. Our supportive team, your peers in the house, and your loved ones can all become the support system you need to escape the power of depression, create new and healthy means of coping with stress, fear, or other triggers of your depression, and move forward with hope for the life you might have thought was never possible.

The Signs And Indications Of Depression

Depression can feel like there is a constant dark cloud hanging over your life. You no longer find enjoyment in activities you once loved, you lack motivation and the desire to do things with others, and you feel constantly lethargic. These are just a few of the signs of depression and indications that you need to seek help in understanding the genuine cause of your depression and how to correct it. Other common symptoms of depression that you might see in yourself or others might call to your attention include:

  • Two weeks or more of feeling low or lacking an interest in activities and life in general
  • Changes in your sleep pattern, such as difficulty falling asleep or waking up after being asleep for just a short time
  • Changes in your eating pattern that could include overeating or no interest in eating
  • Feeling tired all the time or that you have no energy
  • Changes in your mood can also impact your memory and ability to concentrate or make decision
  • A very poor self-image can make you feel overwhelming guilt for no specific reason or have feelings of being worthless
  • Increased feelings of restlessness or irritability
  • Having suicidal thoughts or the desire to hurt yourself
  • Chronic or unusual pain that does not subside with normal treatment

The Immense Value Of Community And Support When Facing Depression Recovery

Unlike with many other conditions or illnesses, people who are dealing with depression often pull deeper into isolation rather than reaching out to others for help. They have feelings of shame or guilt that they really cannot understand or express. In many cases, they also have low self-esteem, making them feel as if they do not deserve the help of others to overcome their challenges. At The Forest Sober Living, we are dedicated to providing community support to our residents who are dealing with depression and recovering from this emotionally painful condition.

The unique setting at The Forest Sober Living creates an immediate bond between the residents as each one faces a challenge that is their own but also a uniting force. All the people sharing the living space with you need your support as much as you need theirs. Every person is on a journey that they are not likely to complete without the help, support, and concern of the community, that is, the team and residents of The Forest Sober Living.

Your family and friends are not able to stay at The Forest Sober Living with you. However, they are welcome and even strongly encouraged to visit and to call as often as possible. We know that your journey to recovery from depression is only in the early stages while you are a resident at The Forest Sober Living. We hope that you will embrace the involvement of loved ones in your time at The Forest Sober Living, knowing that you are building a foundation that will help you remain free from the clutches of depression in the future.

As your time at The Forest Sober Living comes to a close, our team will also encourage you to reach out to groups near your home that can offer added support and guidance. Community groups where you will have peers to discuss your recovery, workshops that will help you learn new coping skills and hone the ones you bring with you from The Forest Sober Living, and mental health coaches in your hometown are all things that will help you know that even after leaving The Forest Sober Living, you will still have the support and resources you need to continue your progress and healing.

Crucial Mental Wellness Practices

During your stay at The Forest Sober Living, we encourage you to take steps to motivate yourself with therapeutic practices that can involve group support or be undertaken on your own as a time for personal reflection and learning. Some of the practices that our previous residents have found the most helpful and rewarding include:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): This process of evaluation and learning helps individuals identify negative thoughts and behavior patterns that feed their depression. Once these factors are identified, they can be altered or countered with a more healthy response that reinforces positivity and a strong self-image.

Mindfulness Practices: Techniques such as meditation and deep breathing can become priceless coping mechanisms when you feel overwhelmed or stressed. These practices are also ideal when you need to clearly focus your mind on a task or goal without distractions of negativity.

Time Management and Goal Setting: Our team works with residents to establish achievable goals and strategies for managing daily tasks and lengthy milestones. Each step toward the goal is progress that will feel rewarding and increase your feelings of accomplishment and positivity.

Career Support and Reintegration: If you are preparing to return to your job after leaving The Forest Sober Living, our team will offer coaching and strategy-building sessions to help you succeed, even when you face added pressure or challenges in the workplace.

The skills and processes you learn and practice at The Forest Sober Living will continue to provide the help you need when navigating the world beyond the safe setting and doors of The Forest Sober Living. Our team and your peer group will help you begin to rebuild your self-confidence and self-image while at the house so that you leave with the tools and ability to continue to thrive and grow as you return to your home and the routine of your daily life.

Essential Tools And Strategies For A Lifetime Of Depression Management

Every person in the world experiences challenges and issues in their lifetime. The critical factor is how they choose to deal with them. As you move forward in your depression recovery, you will find that there are many healthy ways to ward off depression and feelings of becoming overwhelmed and lost. Some of the coping mechanisms you can employ in your daily life to keep depression at bay include:
  • Regular physical exercise boosts endorphins, helps improve your self-image, and relieves stress.
  • A healthy and balanced diet will keep your body as strong as possible. Including fruits, veggies, protein, and whole grains in your diet will increase your energy level and have a mood-stabilizing impact.
  • Mindfulness and meditation help manage stress, maintain focus, and balance emotions.
  • Surrounding yourself with positive, supportive people, joining a group, or taking part in group activities like a team sport or a book discussion group can reduce feelings of isolation.
  • Getting 7-9 hours of sleep will help to avoid depressive symptoms. Establish a nighttime routine to create a calming and soothing atmosphere so you can fall asleep more rapidly and ensure a regular sleep schedule.
  • Participate in art, music, or journaling activities as a therapeutic practice to manage stress and provide an emotional release and a positive distraction.
  • Being outdoors is proven to reduce stress, boost mood, and improve mental clarity. Take a walk, sit by the river, read a book on a park bench, and enjoy the fresh air, sunlight, and increased mental clarity found in nature.
