Is Binge Drinking Really An Issue?

Many people will argue that binge drinking is not a genuine addiction because it happens rarely, and the rest of the time, the person can control when and how often they drink. This is simply how many binge drinkers try to rationalize their problem. They are looking for excuses instead of seeing the physical harm and toll their drinking is having on relationships, their work or professional life, and even their emotional well-being. If you are ready to take back control of your life from binge drinking, please know that the compassionate team at The Forest Sober Living is here to help you on your path to recovery and a life of sobriety. We offer a program that includes complete care for your body, mind, and spirit in a respectful, welcoming, and healing manner. Please get in touch with our team to learn how you can take this first monumental step in regaining control of your life and your future.

What Is Binge Drinking?

Binge drinking is a very hazardous practice where the person decides or chooses to consume a large amount of alcohol, often very rapidly, with the intention of getting drunk. The blood alcohol level rapidly increases to reach or exceed the legal definition of intoxicated, which is 0.08%. At this level, the average person is somewhat impaired in their ability to make good choices and to detect hazards or danger. If the level of alcohol increases to 0.1.%, the person will demonstrate slurred speech, slowed thinking, and reduced reaction times. Walking and talking at all becomes challenging when the BAC reaches 0.15%. Loss of consciousness can occur between 0.20 and .030%, and over 0.40 is likely to cause a coma or death.

For the average-sized man, binge drinking is typically considered consuming more than five drinks in two hours. The average woman would consume four or more drinks in two hours to fall into the category of binge drinking. While not all binge drinkers consume alcohol every day, binging can be the early sign of difficulty with alcohol that can lead to daily drinking to excess.

Who Are Binge Drinkers?

Binge drinking is not limited to one age, race, or sex as a rule. There are binge drinkers who are teenagers, working professionals, college students, and even the elderly. These drinkers can be male or female, as well. The common factor that is most often shared by binge drinkers is stress or trauma. Many are binge drinking to escape something, and this is the form of emotional coping that they have discovered or have access to when they feel they want to escape the emotional weight they bear.

The True Cost Of Binge Drinking

Sadly, many people look at binge drinking as a harmless act that they only indulge in on rare occasions. However, the cost of binge drinking goes far beyond the cost of the alcohol to quickly get drunk and forget whatever is weighing on them, including:

  • Potentially life-altering or life-threatening health issues that include heart problems, liver disease, damage to the immune system, alcohol poisoning, and other maladies that are more common when your overall health is questionable and your body is in a weakened state
  • Mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, and an inability to appropriately handle emotional challenges
  • Damaged or destroyed relationships when trust is broken, you withdraw from loved ones and place more focus and interest in alcohol than family and friends.
  • Educational and professional hardships are common when a binge drinker is not living up to their full potential, missing deadlines or opportunities that could be essential in reaching goals and continued success in school or at work.

At The Forest, we understand that binge drinking must be seen as a struggle or cry for help. Our team is here to help you understand the stress and cause of your binge drinking and correct that challenge to allow you to escape from the control binge drinking has on you and your life. Our team will help support you through a treatment plan that can be a combination of many programs and therapies, including:

  • One-on-one counseling sessions with a licensed therapist to resolve the issues, fear, stress, or other challenges that are motivating you to binge drink

  • Motivational Interviewing helps to inspire you to stop drinking and binge drinking while seeing the value in your sobriety and the life that it will offer you.
  • Trauma care and evaluation will help to identify the trauma that is pushing you toward binge drinking and resolve those issues to break the chain of control the trauma and alcohol have on you and your life.
